Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Mise-en-Scene:

What I first see in this front cover shows the subject putting on a very serious expression - which shows that he means business and isn't going to take any insults which brings out this 'hard man' look which is developed by his non-verbal communication (NVC). Also from the way he's dressed and expresses himself (by looking seriously at the reader) really connotes the emphasis of the whole hip-hop genre. Also the earring that he is wearing is also showing he has some sort of class and style - which to be a hip-hop artist can be seen quite regularly as a prop. His eyes also seems very piercing and connotes that he is serious about what he does (once again is the typical stereotype of hip-hop). The setting however is difficult to distinguish as it is very clear - which connotes how this magazine just wants to focus on Snoop Dogg himself and without including Hip-Hop things like a sports car or graffiti behind him which does emphases that this magazine is more of a 'Snoop Dogg behind the mask' and with the text under his name saying balancing the family - really does support the fact that this magazine is not only providing information about him career-wise, but perhaps personally as well. The lighting is very high and bright - which for a hip-hop magazine is quite odd as one would expect for there to be low lighting and a more street-style type of setting. This may also appeal to people who are not into hip-hop and may interest them on how these artists live their lives and that there is more to hip-hop than the chains, cars and all that.

Anchorage:

The text is very bold and loud which really does symbolises the whole theme of hip-hop. The font was used well as it is very clear to interpret and the tone the font seems to share is very serious yet bold - which is very similar to Snoop Dogg in that sense. The colour of the text is displayed very clear from the coloured background surrounding the text and doesn't interfere with the image (goes over it or something) and makes the image stand out. The text that shows Snoop Dogg's name is however different from the rest of the other texts - as it is even bolder than the others and has a more 3D-ish effect so that ,apart from the main title, it can be the text that stands out the most and people who walk by this magazine can see that Snoop Dogg will be featured in this magazine - which will also attract those people who are interested in Snoop Dogg's music or him as a person. Where it says Est.1988, the font is much different in comparison to the main cover lines and the others - it's different because it doesn't seem to be the text of a hip-hop magazine - more of a classical one, but I suppose that this was used for the history of the magazine and is unrelated to the whole concept.

Magazine Conventions:

The main cover lines and title really does work well with the image due to the colour and the organisation is very clear - which is very attractive to people looking to buy a music magazine. Back on to the colours of purple and gold also brings out the genre of hip-hop as purple can represent wealth (as hip-hop artists can express themselves through this) and the gold for things like their chains and jewellery which also emphasises this. There is no clear logo, but the main title really looks bold and based on the genre of music that this magazine is displayed (which by the way is hip-hop) doesn't really need a logo as it works well without one and is consistent on the basis of keeping the magazine what it is supposed to be. The bar-code is very clear in view at the bottom - which again doesn't interfere with the whole concept of the magazine. There is also a dateline shown to inform the readers what issue it is (say if it's during summer and the issue is a July issue - it would appeal to the reader to be fairly recent) which is relevant for the magazine. The left third is quite neat and without the image and names of the artists mentioned - it wouldn't seem to be a hip-hop genre magazine. This is used well however, as it does look a lot more professional and clearer as everything that is there is easy to view and understand. The banner at the top is eye-catching due to the font and the mis-spelled language which can bring attention to the readers as the concept is related to.
